If you’ve been publishing “evergreen” content, I have great news for you! With minimal effort, you can dramatically increase your traffic by boosting your old articles.
What Is Evergreen Content?
Evergreen content is information that remains consistently relevant and valuable to readers over a long period. Unlike news articles or trend-focused pieces, evergreen content continues to attract traffic and generate interest years after its publication.
I typically recommend that content creators focus on evergreen content as much as possible. When maintained effectively, this type of content can continue to pay dividends on initial work for a long time.
For example, my articles explaining affiliate marketing or how to get business testimonials will likely be relevant and useful for a long time with only minimal updates needed. They are great examples of evergreen content.
However, my articles about health and wellness trends and interior design trends in 2025 are highly relevant right now, but they won’t be relevant in a couple of years, so they’re not evergreen content. I know I’ll need to redo the research if I want to keep getting that traffic in the future.
Evergreen Content Can Drive Big Traffic
The New York Times’ Wirecutter first published their guide to the best beard trimmer1 at the end of May 2020. It only took about a month for that page to start ranking consistently in Google and since then it has consistently driven more than 5K visitors from Google every day—often much more.
This is an excellent example of an evergreen topic because it’s just as relevant today as it was when it was published.

On October 1, 2015, the New York Times published a story about several men who couldn’t grow beards and opted for a beard transplant.2 A couple of days later, on October 3, 2015, the story received more than 5K visitors from Google. Unfortunately organic traffic quickly declined and within a year the page was down to less than 100 visitors a day from Google.

While the topic of beard transplants is still relevant today, these specific stories are old and out of date and are unlikely to generate any meaningful traffic.
This is why it’s crucial to publish evergreen content if you want sustainable traffic growth.
