A Quick Primer on Medium 📋
Medium is an online publishing platform similar to Substack, with a few notable differences.
Like Substack, users on Medium can follow other users and post content in Publications.
Unlike Substack, Medium users can also post content to their profile (no Publication needed).
Like Substack, Medium users can subscribe by email to content they like.
Unlike Substack, they subscribe to a writer rather than a publication.
Like Substack, Medium users can pay a monthly subscription to access paywalled content.
Unlike Substack, they only have to pay once to access all Medium paywalled content.
This last point is important, so let me explain the difference.
How Medium Monetization Works
On Subtack, readers pay publications individually. Since people can only pay for so many publications before they hit a financial constraint, this model works great for sharing high-value or unique content and building a small but loyal following.
Medium is quite different.
On Medium, there’s only one monthly subscription to access all paid content (from any writer). The subscription fee is paid to Medium. Medium distributes the profits to writers proportionally based on how much time users spend reading their content. This model works better for content with a large or highly engaged potential audience.
How to Start Making Money on Medium 💰
Any writer on Medium can earn money from their content as long as they do three things:
Become a Medium Member. On Medium, having a paid subscription is also known as being a Medium Member. To earn from Medium, you must also support Medium and its writers by subscribing to a Medium Membership. This should be a no-brainer because it only costs $5 a month, and you’ll want to access other paywalled content to see what’s working anyway.
Add your payment information. Although it’s possible to earn money without this step, you’ll need to add your payment information to get paid by Medium. Ensure you connect your Stripe account and verify your tax information so there’s no payout delay once you start earning.
Enable the paywall before you publish. Before you publish an article you want to monetize on Medium, click the “Paywall your story” checkbox. Once you do, only Medium Members will be able to access your content, and you’ll earn a portion of their subscription fee when they do.
